What to Wear for Your Lifestyle Family Session
A Storytelling Photographer’s Guide to Feeling Comfortable and Connected
You’ve booked your storytelling lifestyle session — and now comes the question every family asks: “What should we wear?”
The answer is simpler than you might think. You don’t need matching outfits or a brand-new wardrobe. What matters most is that you feel comfortable, confident, and yourself. But there are a few things that can help your photos look and feel their very best.
Start with a Palette, Not a Match
Rather than choosing identical outfits, think about creating a palette — colours that work together naturally. Soft neutrals, muted tones, or earthy shades tend to photograph beautifully in lifestyle sessions and complement my soft, storytelling editing style.
You might draw inspiration from your surroundings — greens, creams, browns, or warm pinks often blend gently with nature and help create that timeless, cohesive look.
Light vs. Dark — How Colour Affects the Story
If you love darker tones, that’s absolutely fine — they can look rich and moody, especially in woodland or winter settings.
But if you want the focus to be more on you — your expressions, connection, and the emotion of the moment — then lighter colours tend to work best. They reflect light softly onto the skin and draw attention to faces rather than clothing.
Think of your outfit as part of the atmosphere of the image — helping the story unfold rather than distracting from it.
Dress for the Season
The season can completely transform the mood of your session, and your wardrobe can enhance that.
In summer, lighter fabrics like linen and cotton flow beautifully in the breeze and add a sense of movement and softness — perfect for that relaxed, sunlit feeling.
In winter or autumn, knitted textures and layers photograph beautifully. They bring warmth and depth to your images, adding a cosy, storytelling quality that feels so inviting.
Avoid Distractions
Bold logos, large prints, or neon colours can pull focus away from what really matters — your story.
Simple layers, gentle textures, and subtle tones help create timeless photos that won’t date.
Bring Me Your Vision
If you have a specific look in mind — a session you’ve seen and loved — please share it with me. Sometimes that “feeling” comes from the season, the wardrobe tones, the time of day, or the way it was edited. I’ll happily help you understand what makes that look work and tailor your session to reflect it.
I can even put together a mini mood board with outfit inspiration and colours that complement your family’s personality and the story we’re telling.

Above All — Be Comfortable
You’ll be walking, cuddling, playing, and laughing. The most beautiful photos happen when you’re at ease. When you feel comfortable, you connect more naturally — and that’s where the magic really is.
Because in storytelling photography, it’s not about what you wear — it’s about how you feel in the moment.
