Before having children, I think most of us imagine what our family photos will look like, right?
Everyone looking at the camera. Everyone smiling. Beautiful outfits. Perfect hair. Maybe a gorgeous sunset in the background. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting those photos!
But some of the photos I love most are the ones nobody planned. The ones that happen in the seconds between everything else. That's the beauty of family photography.

Maybe your little one runs over and throws their arms around you. Maybe your baby falls asleep halfway through the session. Maybe your partner picks your child up and spins them around. Maybe your children start laughing at something that made absolutely no sense to you!
Those aren't the family photos in Derbyshire you necessarily arrive expecting, but they're often the photos that tell the truth about your family. And that's what I love about family photography.
I'm not just looking for everyone looking at the camera.
I'm looking for connection.
The messy moments count too
There can be a lot of pressure around family photos.
We want everyone to look their best. We want the children to behave. We want everything to go smoothly. But family life isn't smooth. It's noisy and messy and unpredictable. And I actually think that's part of its beauty!
A photo of your child with grass stains on their knees might one day mean more to you than the perfectly posed portrait.
Because you'll look at it and remember exactly who they were.
You might not realise how much you'll miss this
There's something bittersweet about family photography in Derbyshire because you're documenting something while it's still changing.
The baby who won't sit still will eventually be the toddler who won't stop talking. The toddler will become the child who suddenly seems far too grown up.
And one day you'll look back at those photos and realise just how tiny they were!
That's why I don't think photos need to be perfect.
They need to be honest.
I want you to look back and remember the little details you had forgotten.
Sometimes the best photo isn't the smile
I love a beautiful smiling photo. Of course I do.
But sometimes it's the photo where your child is looking at you. Or the one where you're kissing their forehead. Or the one where they're completely absorbed in their own little world.
Those photos can hold so much emotion!
And often, they feel more like a memory than a photo. And that’s what I want from family photos in Derbyshire.
Something that takes you back. Not just something that looks pretty on your wall.
Your children don't need to perform
One of the biggest worries I hear from parents is:
"What if my children don't cooperate?"
Honestly? Please don't worry. Your children don't need to perform for me. They don't need to sit perfectly still or smile on command.
We'll play, explore, cuddle and follow their lead. And I'll photograph what naturally happens.
Sometimes I'll gently guide you, but I don't want your children to feel like they're being put through a photoshoot.
I want them to feel like they're spending time with you.
That's where the good stuff happens!

I think of family photography as creating little pieces of your family's history.
Not just photos for now, but for later.
For your children when they're older. For the day they want to see what they looked like when they were small.
For you when you realise just how quickly those years disappeared! For the generations who come after you and get to see where they came from.
